August bands in the news

In his August column, Bill O'Neill reviewed three cds by bands who will be at the Comber this month. Here's what he had to say:

"Inverted Valentine," Girls, Guns and Glory (MySpace.com/girlsgunsandglory) ***

In one of the more unlikely stories in Boston music history, Girls, Guns and Glory — a country rock band in the mode of the Mavericks — won this year's WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble (previous winners include the Neighborhoods, 'Til Tuesday, Gang Green and the Dresden Dolls).

Girls, Guns and Glory will perform Aug. 22 at the Wellfleet Beachcomber.

"Happiness," A.K.A.C.O.D. (MySpace.com/akacod) ***

A.K.A.C.O.D. is a Boston semi-supergroup: saxophonist Dana Colley of Morphine, singer/bassist Monique Ortiz of Bourbon Princess and Larry Dersch of Binary System. The low rumble of the trio will sound familiar to fans of Morphine.

A.K.A.C.O.D. will perform Aug. 29 at the Wellfleet Beachcomber.

"Low on Cash, Rich in Love," Eric Lindell (Alligator) ** ½

New Orleans-based blues guitarist Eric Lindell adds a Gil Scott-Heron cover ("Lady Day and John Coltrane") to a batch of originals on his latest CD. There's a gentle soulful feel to his songs, sort of like he's the Jack Johnson of the blues world.

Eric Lindell will perform Aug. 13 at the Wellfleet Beachcomber in a benefit show for Provincetown community radio station WOMR-FM.
