Wherever shall you go, whatever shall you do? Take it easy, Scarlett, we've got you covered.

First, come on down to Clam Jam this Thursday! Fork over a $25 donation at the door and support our Pan Mass team. It's almost like riding across the state yourself except it's way less tiring and there are more clams.* Food's served 4-8pm. We're dishing up fried clams, clam chowder, deliciousness from the raw bar, steamers, steamed littlenecks, boneless Buffalo wings, chicken fingers, and salad for you herbivores. Music starts at 4:00 with The Elbows, 6:00 The Rip it Ups, 7:15 Randy and the Oak Trees. Kids under 10 are free even though half the time they eat more than the adults. We need to think that one through for next year.

Friday is Orgone. We wanted to tell you how great this band is but know you're pressed for time so we condensed only the most interesting of adjectives from their bio. Orgone plays funk, soul, afrobeat, deep rhythms with raw funk power, down home transcendental, tough and gritty funk, fiery soul, hard hitting afro-soul & funk, Memphis-drenched laid-back and cosmic apocalyptic sound with cold-blooded funk gems, lethal neck-busting bass, a deep hypnotic funk soundscape, undeniably hip-shaking, sub-atomic gut punch, heavy psychedelic groove that's 100% organic heart and soul.**

Summer 2011, here we come!

It's here! It's now! It's summer!

Pay no attention to the weather out there – summer starts this Thursday. If you're not feeling the summer love yet, fear not. You will.

Doors open at 9pm on Thursday for the official kick-off season opener hoopla. We've got The Ticks, The Greenheads and Earth Junior playing and we'll give you a free season pass with each paid admission! What does that get you? Free parking in our lot (don't dawdle though. It fills up), and free or discounted admission on selected shows like the locals party on Monday. But we'll get to that.

On Friday we have Dub Apocalypse - a band we love, full of people we love: Tommy B (John Browns Body),Timo Shanko (G Love & Special Sauce), Dana Colley (Morphine), Ken Clark (Ken Clark Trio), Johnny Trama (Nate Wilson Group, B3 Kings, Peter Prince & the Trama unit). Boston Music Awards winner for Best International Artist of the Year. Again, you get a free season pass with your paid admission.

Saturday is Zili Misik - winner of the 2008 Boston Music award for "Outstanding International Act of the Year." Zili Misik is an 8-piece world-music band that draws heavily on Afrobeat and Brazilian rhythms, bridging cultures and continents with explosive music that connects spirituals, blues, jazz, reggae, samba, gospel and soul.

Sunday late afternoon is the World Famous (literally) happy hour with the Incredible Casuals. Doors open at 4pm. This is one of just a couple Casual Sundays this summer, so don't miss it!

At 10pm come see The Refugee All-Stars – a band of Sierra Leonean musicians who have been living as refugees in the West African nation of the Republic of Guinea. We loved them the last time they came and we can't wait to see them again. A brutal, decade long civil war (1991-2002) in Sierra Leone forced the band members from their homes. It took the lives of many of their loved ones and has left them with physical and emotional scars that may never heal. However, what the war could never take from them was their music. Through music The Refugee All Stars have found a place of refuge, a sense of purpose and a source of power. You can feel it in their music and see it on their faces. Not only did we get a hurricane for labor day weekend, we got one with commitment issues and an identity crisis. Pete Witham and the Cozmic Zombies would have put on a much better show.

Moving on!

It's today. Today is your last day of summer music in the dunes. At 4pm we have the Incredible Casuals for their last (obviously) show of the summer. This one is Classic Beachcomber with special guests galore. It's like opening night but, you know, at the end.

And then at 10pm it's the Beautiful Girls. The Beautiful Girls have released five independent albums, including this year's SPOOKS. As well as building an audience in Australia, they have toured through the US (10 times), Europe and the UK (5 times), Japan (4 times) and Brazil (2 times). They are total jet-setters. In Japan and Brazil they have had extensive airplay, had their music featured on commercials and had a host of magazine articles written about them. We can't wait to see them live. Labor Day is when summer officially ends. It's our last day of business for 2010, so you get what you get and you don't get upset. One thing's for sure, it'll be a great day to hang out in Cahoon Hollow.

Were you here for the beginning of our Ray Neades tribute weekend, last night? If not (or if so, what the heck) you have a shot at Ray Neades Weekend Part Deux (which is French for SATURDAY). That's tonight.

If you don't know who Ray Neades is, you won't have to go far to find someone who does. The guy knew pretty much everyone in music. All roads lead to Ray Neades, including roads like The Upper Crust, The Stinkin' Lincolns and of course Beefy DC. Tonight would make Ray proud. Check it out.

Pete Witham and the Cozmik Zombies
Pete killed it in June so we're making him come back and do it again.
He toured for two years as lead guitarist with Spookie Daly Pride, opening for musicians such as Les Claypool?s Frog Brigade, Arrested Development, Bob Dylan, and other major bands. He returned to Portland and began playing rockabilly music with his long time rhythm guitarist and singer Steve Dunphy. After playing several local shows as an acoustic act, the duo caught the eye of local roots musician/producer Haakon Kallweit, who immediately put together a top notch lineup to play Pete's original music. In short, he's all that and you will like him.

Rhett Miller plays 8/20

Is it just us or does it still feel like the Fourth of July around here? Weather's great (looks around frantically for wood to knock), people are happy and there's the requisite amount of shark drama. In the greater scheme of Cape Cod summers, this one definitely went to 11.

Let's keep it there, shall we? We'lll throw in some indie rock, a few Ray Neades connections and a little reggae for good luck.

There's this one guy who works here who doesn't like reggae. I know. We don't know how it happened either. But you know what? He went home raving about Tarrus Riley last year and If that isn't an endorsement, we don't know what is.

Speaking of endorsements: Holy smokes you people know how to vacation. We think we've seen more of you this year than, well, ever. It's been completely great and we should do it again sometime soon. Like tomorrow. And the next couple weeks. Cause after that we'll have to wait until the Thursday before Memorial Day of 2011 to hang out over oyster shooters.

Let's not think about it.

Let's think about the rest of this week and maybe next because you are not going to believe what's on the horizon. Tonight, for instance: Rhett Miller of the Old 97s. When we announced this show on Facebook people went completely out of their minds. And now it's here. Are you coming?

The other thing that blew up on Facebook was the Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers show (next Thursday). This is not, for the record, the Steven Kellogg who wrote the story about Clorinda, the ballet-dancing cow. It’s amazing to watch them work.”

in which a guitar player tells us how to deal with a live current

We were sitting outside the club yesterday afternoon, eavesdropping. We didn't mean to, but people just kept walking past us saying things like "this is where your dad and I first met" and it kind of makes us curious, you know? Another couple walked up and, looking at the band line-up, tried to reconcile the national acts on the poster with the winding, wooded road they just drove down. Live music puts the Beachcomber on the map, but what keeps it there is you and your stories of how you found us, who you met here and what you did on the dune beside the club (don't worry, we won't tell a soul).

But enough of the navel gazing! We're here to listen to some music. And oh sweet Nelly, do we have music for you. We have another sold out John Brown's Body show tonight. If you got aced out of tickets (we tried to warn you), you can pretend you are on a cruise ship watching from your room (http://www.thebeachcomber.com/stagecam.html). Yesterday we talked to Mike Keenen about a festival they played on a cruise ship in a thunderstorm. Thirty die-hards watched on the deck while the other 4,000 sat snuggly in their rooms watching on monitors. A few stagehands stood by with two-by-fours in case the band got electrocuted. So if you're home, it'll be just like that but without the getting electrocuted part.

On Sunday you will know that all is right with the world because the Incredible Casuals will be playing at 5pm.

On Monday there's a late addition to the calendar: Evelynn Rose. $5 or free with pass @ 10pm. Maverick Magazine calls it "Southern Rock played the way it should be; outrageous and outstanding from the off." Think Black Crowes but twangier. There is no one named Evelynn in the band, if you're wondering.

August 4, 10pm, $20 is Built to Spill with Fauxbois. Built to Spill is one of indie rock's most endearing and enduring bands. A Warner Bros. recording artist since 1995, Built to Spill has also been signed by British based label ATP Recordings. In May they performed at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, curated by cartoonist Matt Groening in Minehead, England. Which rocks. August 5, 10pm, $12, Joseph Arthur. A musician's musician, Joseph has been joined on stage by R.E.M.'s Peter Buck. Ben Harper has also been known to sit in on a few songs. Rolling Stone Magazine's David Browne named Joseph Arthur's 'Come To Where I'm From' as "Best Album of the Decade" and Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament lists the album in his Top #25. August 11, 10pm, $22, The Original Wailers featuring Al Anderson and Junior Marvin. Al Anderson and Junior Marvin, from Bob Marley and the Wailers, continue playing and touring as "The Original Wailers." It was these celebrated musicians who gave Bob Marley the platform for his explosive of Roots Rock Reggae. After all these years, the magic and energy is still there.

Al Anderson was called up in 1974 for "Natty Dread," the breakthrough album for Bob Marley & The Wailers in the US. It was Al Anderson's soulful guitar playing on "No Woman No Cry" which opened the doors to a wider rock audience. Junior Marvin joined the band for the legendary "Exodus" album. Barrington Levy! (plus heaps more)

Good thing it's so hot. This way we can pretend we're in Jamaica when Barrington Levy comes tonight. We've got rum. We've got Barrington. It's going to be a perfect night with reggae's Mellow Canary. Barrington Levy is the man - renowned as the original singer of the dancehall era, inspiring imitators en-route. Come share show him some love.

You know how we dig Apollo Sunshine, right? If there was a wall of staff picks, where we could have bands sit on little shelves for you to pick up and take home, they'd be sitting on it. The New York Times said "Bouncy 60's-style melodies crack wide open, breaking into outbursts of pummeling and feedback before jumping back into the tune. It's all neatly and cleverly plotted, but with a looming chaos that's anything but nostalgic." Yeah, what they said.

Drug Rug's opening. They rock.

On Saturday we've got the sweet, sweet sounds of Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents. Boston music fans will recognize Jen D?Angora (a/k/a Jenny Dee) as the singer/guitarist in garage stalwarts The Downbeat 5 as well as punk/pop darlings The Dents. The Boston Phoenix said ?There isn't a music on earth that better suits D'Angora's voice than girl-group-era R&B, straight-up, and that's what she's singing here - with bonus points for writing songs that hold their own next to the classics.?

Sunday's a double whammy with the Casuals at 4pm ("At a time when folks don't seem to care about music anymore, this oughtta be just the ticket." Chandler Travis) and King Yellowman at 9pm. You know King Yellowman. You love King Yellowman. You know he's a top-selling artist in Jamaica and abroad and he has toured Nigeria, Peru, Sweden, Italy, Germany, England, France, Kenya and Cahoon Hollow Beach. We should have t-shirts made.

Speaking of t-shirts! (nice segue, eh?)Have you been to our new store in South Wellfleet (aka SWellfleet aka SoWo although the Wo doesn't make sense but since when does that matter)? It’s a subtle thing. When you try to describe the music of Kathleen Edwards to someone who doesn’t know her – or who, God help them, is unaware of the sometimes raucous and sometimes sepia-tinged pleasures of alt-country – it can be difficult to find the words to define what it is about her work that makes it such an intimate and unexpectedly moving experience.

That’s not to say that it’s not fun. Not at all. Take a quick scan through YouTube footage of some of her live performances and you’ll find example after example of a woman who, above and beyond her considerable skills as a performer, is also legitimately funny and engaging as an on-stage presence. That wry sense of humor makes its way into some of her music, as well — watch the videos for either I Make The Dough, You Get the Glory (featuring perhaps the greatest- ever incorporation of Marty McSorley into a song) or The Cheapest Key from her most recent album, Asking For Flowers, and you’ll get a sense of the dry wit and laconic sensibility that offers a welcome balance to the more quietly devastating tangents taken by many of her other songs.

In this sense, her work trods similar psychic territory to that explored by Bill Morrissey and Joe Pernice. It’s not that her music necessarily sounds like theirs – although you certainly wouldn’t be completely off-base in placing her CDs next to theirs on the shelf – but there’s a wonderfully sardonic attitude at work in the music of all three, where lovely, instantly memorable melodies are wedded to carefully-wrought lyrics that waver song-to-song and sometimes even moment- to-moment from the heart wrenchingly sad to the wonderfully offbeat. It’s a really wonderful dichotomy, and one that rewards you for paying attention to the music.

And maybe that’s the subtle part: the fact that careful listening matters. Sure, you can sit back at the ‘Comber (or in your living room) and take long sips of that chilly beer and soak up the songcraft of What Are You Waiting For or One More Song The Radio Won’t Play and bob your head along in time with her terrifically laconic (there’s that word again) voice as it traces a careful path through the music… and you can have a perfectly good time doing it. But it’s when you really hone in on what she’s saying – and how she’s saying it – that you begin to discover the full reward of Kathleen Edwards’ songs.

Because her lyrics… man. These aren’t lyrics in the everyday sense of words-that-accompany-a-melody. These are, at times, short stories set to music. And like Pernice and Morrissey – and, for that matter, Richard Buckner and some of the earlier work of both Lisa Germano and Mark Eitzel – they’re stories of yearning and loss, memory and failure, ambition fallen short and dreams never realized. If you’ve read the stories of Raymond Carver or the novels of Russell Banks, it’s a landscape you’ll recognize. And like all of those other writers/artists, the stories she tells are as powerful for what she doesn’t say as they are for the words that actually find voice. Listen to Pink Emerson Radio or Hockey Skates – or, for the experience in its truest form, Mercury – and you’ll find an ache between the words that feels miles wide, years deep, vast and lonesome and unmistakably real.

Boris McCutcheon, Toubab Krewe, Boston Naturals and Incredible Casuals - coming soon to Esquire magazine's Best Bar in America! That's right, we made it to #1 on the Esquire list - no surprise to you all (or more accurately, thanks to you all). Here's the list that's keeping us company.

And then they interviewed Matt Sugg, who gives it up that women hit on him.

So it's safe to say, things are good around here.

And gettting better because the bands that are heading our way are some of the best we've seen. Bands like Boris McCutcheon on Thursday. He plays high-road hillbilly desert-rat folk, otherwise known as Post-Modern Country. He lives off the grid in New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains. With an outhouse. You can read about him in Steve Almond's book, "Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life" (Random House, 2010):

"He spoke in a soft growl and dressed like a mestizo farmer; he had no fixed address. One week he was crashing on a farm in Woods Hole, the next he was with Bones down on the Cape. His pattern of employment was equally erratic. My friend Mitch likes to tell the story of seeing Boris play a Brookline pub and bumping into him the next morning, fixing a sprinkler on the Boston Common. He’d taken a post as an irrigation manager for the city, though he departed some weeks later, after dropping his key ring down a sewer grate, a blunder requiring the closure of a major road and the deployment of numerous city employees along with a giant scooper. He would later memorialize this episode in the song '17 Scoops.'"

We're putting traps on all our drains now.

Then on Friday we've got Toubab Krewe, who blew our minds and jammed our dance floor when they played here a couple years ago. Billboard Magazine said Toubab Krewe "has essentially created the intersection of West African traditional music and American rock."
New York Times wrote: "Asheville, North Carolina may not seem like a stronghold for African-rooted music, but Toubab Krewe has soaked up the patterns and rhythms from Zimbabwe, Congo, Brazil and the Caribbean…"
Boston Herald: "expertly meshed surf guitar with Malian rhythmic patterns, a Dick Dale moves-to-Timbuktu experiment in Afro-California fusion."
Relix Magazine: "deep, Malian desert blues and electric, iconoclastic rock 'n' roll bombast."

Garage Band Weekend and Clam Jam just wouldn't be the same without you

Garage Band Weekend starts tonight! We have a huge line-up of some of our favorite Boston garage bands, including some new bands we can't wait to hear. What's a garage band? Wild & wooly, raw, obscure, trashy, lo-fi, roots-based forms, such as '60s (and '60s-influenced) garage rock, surf/instrumental rock'n'roll, hot rod, frat rock, rockabilly, lounge/exotica, broken blues, greasy soul, R&B, funk, mod, freakbeat, psychedelic rock, '70s proto punk/rock'n'roll, powerpop, punk rock, hard-edged new wave, art-damaged noise rock, '80s garage/surf revival, swamp rock, psychobilly, modern garage punk and noisy, primitive rock'n'roll.

Can you imagine anything more awesome?

Nine bands total, $10 a night, it's a music festival in a bottle. Music tonight and tomorrow starts at 9pm. (Keep reading for the full schedule of who's when.)

On Sunday we've got Turbulence and the Dis n' Dat Band playing the 4pm slot for a little hit of reggae to round out the weekend. It's very possible a whole heap of people will forget to go to work on Monday because they didn't see the Casuals on Sunday. Don't fret, they'll be back next week and the order of the Universe will be restored.

On Thursday June 10 we have the second annual Pan-Mass Fund Raiser Clam Jam - back by popular demand! A $25 donation gets you music and food and lots of both. Kids under 10 are free until 8pm. Everyone's pitching in and donating their time and talents because the thought of riding a bicycle across the state makes some of our heads explode so we're all doing what we can.

We'll be serving fried clams, clam chowder, raw bar, steamers, steamed little necks, boneless wings, kids chicken fingers and salad. That's the clam part. The jam part starts at 4pm with the Elbows, followed by the Rip it Ups at 6pm, Randy and the Oak Trees at 7:15pm and Squidda at 8:30. It's going to be a party. This much we know for sure.

It was brought to our attention recently that the actual, technical, meteorologically-correct first day of summer is June 21, Summer Solstice.

Whatever.

We live in an alternate reality down here in the dunes of Cahoon Hollow and in our world summer starts on the Thursday before Memorial Day - always has.* Therefore, summer starts tomorrow (or today, depending on when you check your email). Happy summer!

Have you checked out the calendar lately? It's one of the best ever. Built to Spill, Arrested Development, Donavon Frankenreiter, John Brown's Body, Kathleen Edwards, Rhett Miller....the names just keep popping up (and the tickets keep selling so you might want to get on that). Check back often because we don't know what's gotten into Dan this year but he is a booking fiend.

We keep hearing that people are all a dither about getting here this Thursday and Friday - as well they should be. It is usually this time of year that my mind begins to yearn like a sad dog for the opposite end of the season cycle. A big snow fall and stopped everything, calming us all down for 6 hours. Then that same snow fall squeezes into tighter lanes. It melts and leaves sand, dirt and snow. The major holidays pass by and the cold just becomes the cold. It is in one of those aching moments, as I suit up with an air of protest, that I start to dream of the summer. Three things come to mind. The first being a certain lake in Maine. The second is a sunburn and the thirds is the sand in my shoes from loading into a gig at the Beach Comber.

A couple years ago I wrote an article on band fashion because really, who doesn't want to read about band fashion? Having just been to the Cracker show at the Comber, I asked David Lowery first. This is what he said:

I have to credit some of my fashion sensibility to my girlfriend/manager, Velena Vego.

She has been a concert promoter for 18 years and is also a tri-delt. So rock with southern prep.

I'm half English and southern. So the two of us fit together in some way.

For years I dressed better off stage, or at least more conservative offstage. The grunge years were very difficult for me. I dont like baggy clothes.

I am secretly a mathematician who happens to be in a rock band. Hence the underlying collegiate look.

The pseudo western suede jacket was from the vintage store behind the 40 watt. The plaid tie and belt from an urban outfitters.The green gingham shirt was from the old navy in Cambridge. 8 bucks.

And how can you ever go wrong. with classic black converse.

Anyone who's stayed right on the beach in the off season can tell you, there's nothing like it. Wake up to a salty breeze and listen to gulls and surf. Make a cup of coffee, sit on the deck, and be in a hurry for absolutely nothing. Or wake up with the birds and head down to Cahoon Hollow Beach. Have breakfast in town. Take a drive to Provincetown. Visit the rest of Cape Cod National Seashore. It's all still there, just much less crowded.

Why are we tormenting you with this idea? Because we think you need a vacation, and we have just the cottage for you. The Travel Channel came by and concluded that when it comes to the sexiest beach bars in the world, the Beachcomber is number 10. Fiery Furnaces at the Comber this weekend!

As of tomorrow (Friday) the Beachcomber will be open 7 days a week for your drinking, dining and dancing pleasure.

Did someone say dancing? Prepare to do some! We have the Rip It Ups gracing our stage on Friday at 10pm, followed by the Fiery Furnaces on Saturday at 10pm and the Incredible Casuals on Sunday at 4pm.

In the highly unlikely event that you have not heard, the Rip It Ups are a combination of some of the finest musicians to grace our stage. They're like a brain trust of musical talent. And they will get you dancing.

And oh, what can we say about Fiery Furnaces? NPR called it a "sonically adventurous sound." One fan called them "delightfully kitschy and so ahead of our times." Their latest album, "I'm Going Away," comes out on Thrill Jockey next month. Often compared to The White Stripes, Fiery Furnaces' Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger are not to be missed this weekend.

Clam Jam! It's one of those things where you get more than your money's worth AND support a great cause. What's not to like? Clam Jam is our Pan Mass fundraiser and it happens tomorrow (Thursday) from 4pm to midnight. Between 4 and 8pm we'll be dishing up mussels, steamed littlenecks, chowder, salad, fried clams, and fries - as well as chicken fingers for the under age set. It's a family thing! Tickets are $20 if you come in time for food, $10 for the late arrivals who just want music (8pm). Rip-it-Ups, Earth Junior and Bone are donating their time and talent to help raise money for cancer research - from when it gets dark to midnight.

The Beachcomber opens every year on the Thursday before Memorial Day and closes on Labor Day. We can't imagine what kind of butterfly effect would occur if we changed this schedule.

There's a whole checklist of rituals to honor, including (but not restricted to), free pass nights on Thursday and Friday. With your paid admission, you'll get a free season pass. It not only looks cool, it actually does things for you - like get you discounts on some of the shows and let you park for free in our lot. Our pass is nothing like some other passes which are, to quote one of our facebook friends, "too tool to use."

Come Thursday and catch the Greenheads, Earth Jr. and The Ticks! The Ticks are hilarious and, as it turns out, great songwriters and performers. They bring it. Earth Jr. plays these rocking originals that make you wish they would just play originals, and then they bust out a cover that makes you wish they'd do more covers. The Greenheads threaten to blow out all our windows when they play the Comber - partially with volume and partially from sheer awesomeness.

In short, we lure you in with the promise of a free pass and then rock your world. You may cry real tears at closing time.

But let's not think about that now. Because we have a Huge! New! Summer! ahead of us.

On Friday we have the Nate Mott Band which, I am not ashamed to say, I have a new crush on. Go to their website and listen for a few minutes so you can have a crush of your own.

On Saturday we have Barrence Whitfield & the Savages. Do you know how lucky we are to have Barrence Whitfield so close? He just did a gig in Australia and is forever playing Europe, where people cannot get enough of him. If you've seen him, you know what I'm talking about.

On Sunday afternoon we have the Incredible Casuals. There would be an angry mob outside our door wielding pitchforks and torches if we didn't schedule Sundays with the Casuals.

On Sunday night, we have the Boston Naturals. It seems only right to have them back for the first Sunday night of the season, since they played the last Sunday night of last season. See? It's a delicate balance. Besides, we loved them and couldn't wait for them to come back.

If you have read this far, you are about to be rewarded for your patience and tenacity.

We are ringing in Memorial Day with Pato Banton.

Pato Banton is the cure for the evening news. Listen to his music for a few minutes and you may find your blood pressure lowering. Hip and dancey, his songs have a quiet grace that make you feel like everything's going to be alright after all. You will love, love, love this show.

We missed you so much over the winter, we've been extra busy lining up cool things for you when you come back.

A.K.A.C.O.D. in the Cape Cod Times

Ken Capobianco wrote a terrific story on A.K.A.C.O.D. in today's Cape Week. A.K.A.C.O.D. plays tonight and features Dana Colley (from Morphine).

Of Monique Ortiz, Capobianco writes: "Often she sounds as if she fell out of a '40s film noir, but she also has developed a vulnerability and emotional directness. You can hear blues rock influences as well of someone like PJ Harvey (who, let's face it, is one of the great modern blues vocalists)."

Can you imagine a better match for Dana Colley's saxophone? I've been a fan of pretty much everything Dana's been involved in, but this one sounds especially promising. I just wish they'd come up with a name that's easier to type.

This is it! Hard to believe summer has come and gone in its usual whirlwind fashion. Did you get everything in you had hoped? Trips to the beach? Relaxing with friends? Catching a live show at the Comber? Oh sure, there will be more live shows after Sunday - but you'll have to wait until next year to see them. And oh yes you can get oysters at a hotel lobby raw bar somewhere, but wouldn't you rather have them fresh on a deck while you sit in the sun and watch the waves? We don't mean to henpeck, but you should probably have your people call our people so they can sort out your end of summer schedule. Here are some things to consider:

Part One Tribe
This Cape Cod success story is one of the hardest working original alternative/reggae/rock/blues bands around. Part One Tribe has been living in their van on the road touring since April, 2004, only going home to visit family for 1 week at Thanksgiving and 2 weeks at Christmas. In this time they have sold over 30,000 CD's out of their van.They've recorded and released 6 studio albums, 3 live albums and a limited edition acoustic album. Their latest album "Obvious As Ever" (Long Beach Records) is rumored to be coming out "mid 2008." Check our math, but that should be now if not sooner.

Squidda
Squidda is a four piece rock band from Outermost Cape Cod. Jesse (bass) and Josiah (guitar and vocals) grew up together in Provincetown, immersed in Caribbean music backing up a virtuoso steel drum player in the band Magic of Steel. Fireplug lead guitar player and singer Tom brings classic songwriting, gnarley blues chops and arena rock sensibilities, while Reid (drums) rounds out the package with soulful non-traditional rhythms and amusing facial expressions. They say their plan for world domination hinges on Obama winning the upcoming presidential election, "because how can you Rock without Barrack?"

New Orleans-based blues guitarist Eric Lindell adds a Gil Scott-Heron cover ("Lady Day and John Coltrane") to a batch of originals on his latest CD. There's a gentle soulful feel to his songs, sort of like he's the Jack Johnson of the blues world.

Eric Lindell will perform Aug. 13 at the Wellfleet Beachcomber in a benefit show for Provincetown community radio station WOMR-FM.

We have another great weekend planned for you! And we tried to arrange for some sweet beach weather. Don't forget your sunscreen.

Have you seen Indiscretion? The last time we saw them they played a gig alongside a bunch of other bands. Indiscretion had the opening slot and everyone - all those seasoned and jaded music people - just stood there gaping. And then there was dancing. This band is just so DANG GOOD. You will go home and tell everyone you know about them. So young, so mindblowing, so taking the month of July out with a bang. Thursday night @ 10. $8

And then, happy August! On Friday, August 1st, we have the Old Silver Band and Sputnik.The Old Silver Band gained an enthusiastic fan base of all ages and shared the stage with the likes of Leon Russell, Soulive, The Slip, Gordon Stone, Sara Bareilles, Hot Buttered Rum, State Radio, Naughty by Nature and the Roots. This summer the brothers, Matt and John Beninghof, had the good fortune of performing with Charles Walton at their weekly gigs in Woods Hole. It became apparent after only a few shows that a) drums equal more women on the dance floor b) Charles is a NASTY drummer c) the women on the dance floor love Charles. And with that simple conclusion, a new formation of The Old Silver Band was born. Clearly they have their priorities in line.

Sputnik is a NYC/Cape Cod based band led by Genie Morrow (Longwave, the Sensate Lovers). They combine dreamy vocals, ambient guitar effects, trumpet, keyboards and accordion to create a joyful, summery blend of straight ahead pop, with irresistible melodies. If there was a way to record what a summer night on the dunes sounds like, this band is it.

Oh such a buzz about Saturday's Old 97's show! Not just the buzz around town, either. The New Yorker said "Old 97's have been occupying a valuable sliver near the border of alternative country and power pop for the better part of a decade. With their last record, 'Drag It Up,' in 2004, it seemed as though they might move. Dark and sometimes muted, it found the band grappling with maturity, mortality, and even its own musical future—the lead singer and principal songwriter, Rhett Miller, had recorded an excellent solo album before 'Drag It Up,' and he added another one just after. 'Blame It on Gravity' (New West), the band's new album, represents a full resupply of its most attractive quality—its energy." We can't wait to see them, and it sounds like many of you can't either.

It's Squirrel Nut Zippers! This is the first time Squirrel Nut Zippers have played on Cape Cod and we're very pleased and proud that they chose the Beachcomber as their virgin venue. They've sold all those records, been in heavy rotation on MTV and played on Regis & Kathie Lee, Letterman, Leno, Conan and Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve (did I mention Sesame Street?). Film Crew at the Comber

We thought we should give you a little warning, so you can start deciding what to wear. On Saturday night, a film crew will be coming to show the world how incredibly sexy the Beachcomber is. We're not making this up. It's for a Travel Channel program about the 21 Sexiest Bars (in America? the known world? we're not sure). They're coming for the John Brown's Body show, because what's sexier than reggae?

We have two nights of John Brown's Body, tonight and tomorrow, followed by Incredible Casuals and Spookie Daly Pride on Sunday and then Morgan Heritage for the rescheduled show on Monday. Bud E Green's in the house on Tuesday and on Wednesday we're having a record release party for Apse, a Cape Cod band who's gone all international on us.

OH FOR HEAVEN'S SAKES. Morgan Heritage couldn't make it to the Cape today and let us know, um, while we were setting up for them.

So we tried to get the word out, which involved listening to a ringing phone for hours and hours on the request line of radio stations because hey guess what? Radio station people who answer the office line? They go home at 5. So we sent them emails that said things like "hey, can you play that song where the band doesn't show up and the club has to reschedule and/or refund tickets?"

Morgan Heritage is quite sure they can be here by Monday, so we've rescheduled for then. Obviously, the tickets you bought are just fine and dandy on Monday. If you can't make it Monday, give us a shout and we'll refund your $.

We have a huge, as in ridiculously huge, week of reggae just around the corner!

Tuesday brings Morgan Heritage for their first time at the Comber. Wikipedia describes them as "a reggae band formed by five children of famed reggae-artist Denroy Morgan. Despite their relative youth, they have been referred to as 'reggae royalty.' Having grown up in their father's music studio in the U.S. the group, then consisting of eight of the children, made their first appearance at Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica. They were subsequently signed by MCA and released their debut album Miracles in 1994." It also says they're touring with bands like Steel Pulse and Eek-a-Mouse, which brings us to...

Wednesday: Eek-a-Mouse. Love the Mouse! Everywhere you read about him, people refer to his unique sing-song style of skatting. He is fun to listen to and fun to watch - with a stage presence few can equal. No, we take that back. No one can equal da Mouse.

Thursday we're keeping it up with DJ Bud E. Green, and then Friday and Saturday we have back-to-back shows with John Brown's Body. more reasons to hit the beach

Hey, we're open seven days a week now, for lunch and dinner! And of course late night snacks and LIVE MUSIC.

This weekend starts off with Bonerama (6/20, $10) - a blast of New Orleans horns that lets it rip on vintage funk, classic rock and free improvisation. Did we mention there's something like four trombones up there? Rolling Stone called them "the ultimate in brass balls" (2005) and praised their "…crushing ensemble riffing, human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls" (2007). And what other brass band could snag an honor for "Best Rock Band" (Big Easy Awards 2007)?

The buzz on Bonerama has grown with hometown acclaim, lots of roadwork and a pair of live albums. The Boston Herald called them a "bonehead's dream"; the Vail (CO) Daily noted that "the sound is fat and wet; sometimes downright lusty." Offbeat put it, "That nerdy kid in the band room with the trombone just might have the last laugh after all."

This afternoon we closed the outdoor deck for a spell since it was freaking freezing out there and not so many people wanted to eat lunch huddled under the awning. That made for a happy crowd inside. There were lots of kids, and lots of staff families celebrating Father's Day in the place we love most. Even in the rain.

Today wasn't such a bad one, rain wise. Sometimes it gets a little nutty. After all, we're something like 30 miles or so out in the Atlantic. On some nights it's like being an extra in a Gilligan's Island episode. They probably had a raw bar, too, and they always seemed to have fancy tropical bevs handy-by.

But they didn't have Squirrel Nut Zippers! We do. They're playing their first ever Cape Cod show right here on July 17. Tix on sale now.

Have you picked up the May 28 - June 10 issue of the Improper Bostonian? It's the one with the very pink, very John Waters bestrewn, cover. There's a piece by Paul Robicheau in it, called Sound Waves, about venues and festivals "a seashell's throw from the ocean." He wrote a nice description of the Comber and included some highlights of this summer's shows. I for one love reading the Improper and am pleased as can be to find the Comber in such fine pages.

The "live" beach cam is up and running for the summer, with
a great live shot of Cahoon Hollow Beach and the Atlantic. It runs 5am-8pm Monday - Saturday, and 5am-4pm on Sunday.

Looking for a bargain? Our Rt. 6 store is up and running and has a clearance rack with some of your favorite Beachcomber beachwear at 40-60% off! Greenheads this weekend!

The Greenheads rocked SO HARD on opening night, we asked if they'd come back this Friday. East Coast Tremors will be opening - recently described as "if Dick Dale and the Cramps had a love child." The consensus is they are not hard to look at, either.

Back to the Greenheads - did you see their new bass player on Thursday night? Sarah Swain (Spike Emerson Society, Professor Gascan, the Sallies, Vein), who's been a special guest for the last who-knows-how-long has moved across the stage to play bass and holy smokes did she kick it. They've worked up some fresh material to go with their new spring look and let's just say our dance floor is not going to know what hit it.

On Saturday we get a night with DJ Bud E. Green, so if you're part of the Not on a School Night crowd and can't come on Tuesdays, here's your chance. And of course there's the Casuals on Sunday afternoon (4ish). Face it, you'll be lost and confused all week if you don't spend some quality Sunday time with the Casuals.

So on Sunday I went to the Cracker show and planned on being all Adult-like and hanging out back by the bar. After all, I'm not really in that "flirt with the band" place in my life and I'm not so much into crowds. And then I thought, well, I should go up front for a couple pictures - in case we start that blog we've been thinking about. So I scooched and squeaked my way through a mass of humanity (hi again, nice people who let me by!) until there I was, in front of the stage just as David Lowery was belting out Euro-Trash Girl - and I swear he was singing it just to me (while very coyly avoiding eye contact).

It's always so good to see old friends and lo and behold there's a whole bunch of new people who turn twenty-one every year. They're there, too (they've been waiting so patiently).

Earth Junior (Thurs) invited very special guest Randy McDonald up to sing with them. We're pretty sure Randy is channeling Johnny Cash because that Cash voice just comes out of nowhere. And then on Saturday Barrence Whitfield had an uninvited guest up on the stage - who knows what he was channeling. Barrence REMOVED the guest from the stage, so we gave him a staff t-shirt for doing such a great job. We love Barrence more and more every time he plays.

The Incredible Casuals kicked off their 28th season on Sunday afternoon. According to Chandler (lifted from the Sonic Trout site):

EVERY SUNDAY AT TWILIGHT, MEMORIAL DAY (MAY 25th) through LABOR DAY (AUG. 31st)!!! -THE INCREDIBLE CASUALS AT THE WELLFLEET BEACHCOMBER, (Cahoon Hollow Beach, Wellfleet, MA., 508 349 6055), 5 to 8 -purposefully ripping off your head since 1980 or so. AND FURTHERMORE: For those poor souls who can't make it to the Beachcomber in person every Sunday for The Weekly Ordeal, now you can experience at least a sliver of it through the Beachcomber's stage cam!! (There's also a beach cam, for simultaneous ocean viewing -it's the next best thing to being there, all courtesy of our good pal, Henry Marcucella, who's obviously a genius...)

We got some ink on the Cracker show (Sunday night) - Ken Capobianco wrote an article in the Cape Cod Times and Ann Wood did a story in Provincetown Magazine. You can pick up Provincetown Magazine for free all over P-town (the current issue is not online). And there are pictures from the show coming soon. Soon because unlike Henry Marcucella I am NOT a genius and am having technical difficulties uploading pictures. Blogger says its publishing to our ftp server, but it's lying.

Bartholomew Gosnold gave cape cod it's name. but what kind of name is Gosnold? are there any Gosnolds in your phone book? i'm looking at the local phone book and there are no Gosnolds in the phone book. The vikings may have named this area the "Promontory of Vinland" of course this may have also been talking about a part of nova scotia or newfoundland. we will never really know. but one thing is for certain the vikings had much better names than Gosnold. "Erik the Red" for example. even "Lief" is much better. testing testing one two three is this thing on..

opening weekend starts this Thursday!

This is it! Opening weekend is just days away! And believe you us, you will forget there was ever such a thing as winter once you walk through that door. And if you walk through the door on Thursday or Friday, you'll get a free Summer Pass with each paid admission. Your pass scores you discounts on selected shows (some are free with the pass, some not so free), and free parking. Free parking! Besides, they look awesome and you want one.

And we don't mean to ruin the surprise but when you open the June issue of Esquire magazine you'll see that they are calling us one of the Best Bars in America. But you knew that already. So now you can point to the magazine and say "see, I told you" to anyone who may not have understood that Best was not just a figure of speech when you were raving about the Comah last summer. You were right all along.

Assuming our math skills are correct and the "est 1978" printed on our t-shirts is not a typo, this is our 30th year! Just think, in 1978 Saturday Night Fever was Album of the Year and we were opening our doors. Crazy, that. Won't you please come wish us a happy birthday?

If you can't wait until Thursday to see the Beachcomber, then glue yourself right now to your television and wait for the new Sam Adams commercial that has clips of the Comah. We've spotted them during Red Sox games because that's when we're most glued. It's sure nice to see those friendly faces and that raw bar. They're nicer in person, but it's a quick fix for the home stretch.
